The Wood River High School tennis team tuned up for the upcoming Capital Invitational tournament in Boise April 29-30 by playing Century of Pocatello on a rainy Saturday in Jerome.
Century swept boys' doubles and took advantage of two Wood River forfeits in boys' singles to nip the Wolverines 6-5. And bad weather canceled another dual meet Saturday against Pocatello.
#1 Hadley DeBree remained undefeated in girls' singles for Hailey while the #1 girls' doubles team of Abby Fairman/Jackie Safran rallied for a down-to-the-wire 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) win over Kyra Maples/Krystle Maples, Century.
The Wolverines of coaches John Radford and Jim Boatwright fared better in a conference meet last week.
Thursday, Wood River captured a solid 8-4 Great Basin Conference West win over the host Burley Bobcats in a meet played in eight-game pro sets to avoid bad weather. The Wolverines had tied Burley 6-6 back on April 5 in Hailey.
In girls' singles, #1 Hadley DeBree, #2 Anna Chrysikopoulos and #3 Alex Mallea swept their matches 8-3, 8-0 and 8-5. Girls' doubles also went Wood River's way, with Abby Fairman and Jackie Safran winning 8-2, Lauren Rust and Danielle Donovan 8-3.
#1 boys' singles Thomas Phelan prevailed 8-1 over Trevor Matthews. Wood River also swept mixed doubles, thanks to Gavin Kastner and Whitney DeBree 8-2 and Seth Curran and Kira Gardner 8-3.
Wood River (5-2-2), a 9-3 home winner over Jerome April 7, traveled to Jerome for a conference meet Tuesday and hosts Gooding today, Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. on the high school tennis courts.
