The Magic Lantern's film festival begins this Friday night at the Ketchum theater. The festival runs from April 22 through May 5 and showcases several of the year's most acclaimed and award-winning independent, art and foreign films.

The first week of the film festival offers numerous delectable treats. The French double-Oscar nominee "The Chorus" is set in 1948 in a strict boys' reform school. Focusing on a visionary teacher's efforts to bring positive change to the students' lives by forming a choir, this magical film took France by storm.

The lavish all-star production of Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice" is one not to be missed. Starring the best of British Jeremy Irons and Joseph Fiennes alongside Shakespeare devotee Al Pacino, this visually stunning movie was described by The New York Times as "like seeing a gallery of Renaissance paintings come to life."

Woody Allen's latest offering "Melinda and Melinda," set in, you guessed it, Manhattan, focuses on two young writers trying to decipher if the essence of life is comic or tragic through concocting differing tales of a troubled young Midwesterner's search for love.

As is to be expected of Allen, the movie is led by an almost-star cast including Rhada Mitchel, Will Ferrell, Steve Carrell, Chloe Sevigny and Amanda Peet.

This weekend's final offering is the Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film. A documentary from India called "Born into Brothels" captures two documentary filmmakers chronicling their time in Sonagchi, Calcutta, and tracks the relationships they developed with children of prostitutes who work the city's notorious red-light district.

If that stellar lineup doesn't satisfy your appetite for the finest in filmmaking, week two sees the arrival of award-winning films from Spain, Japan and the United States. For information about show times for the festival pick up a schedule at the Magic Lantern, 100 E. Second Street in Ketchum, or call 726-4274.
