Valley tennis powers collide

Community School edges out Wood River

Wood River's Thomas Phelan digs deep in the #1 boys' singles match against Cutthroat Tyler Martin.

On a blustery Thursday afternoon in Hailey, two powerhouse teams of Idaho tennis met in Hailey as snow threatened from the west. The Community School Cutthroats tennis team (1-0) opened their season with a 6-4 win over the Wood River Wolverines (4-1-2).

Cutthroat boys went undefeated over Wood River boys with singles #1 Tyler Martin, #2 Scooter Sabel and #3 McClain Porter winning their matches in two sets each. Porter's match was a hard fought 6-4, 7-5 win over Wood River's Connor Fairman.

The Community School's boys' doubles team of Christian Cairncross and Wes Flanigan completed the Cutthroats boys streak with a 6-1, 6-0 win. As Wood River girls fought hard, it was the undefeated Cutthroat boys who gave the Community School the team win.

Wood River kept it close with strong play from their girls with #1 Hadley DeBree, #2 Anna Chrysikopolous, and #1 doubles team Abby Fairman/ Jackie Safran each extending their own unbeaten streaks. Wood River's girls' doubles team were powerful, giving up only 3 games between them as Whitney DeBree and Kira Gardner took their match 6-1, 6-0.

CS 6, WRHS 4

Girls' singles: #1 DeBree (WR) 6-0, 6-2 over Cairncross (CS). #2 Chrysikopolous (WR) 7-5, 6-2 over Alexander (CS). #3 Cody Curran (CS) 6-2, 6-4 over Kami Doan (WR).

Girls' doubles: #1 Fairman/Safran 6-2, 6-0 over Bunce/Harl (CS). #2 DeBree/Gardner 6-1, 6-0 over Stephens/Frehling (CS).

Boys' singles: #1 Martin (CS) over 6-2, 7-5 over Phelan (WR). #2 Sabel (CS) 6-0, 6-0 over Kastner (WR). #3 Porter (CS) 6-4, 7-5 over Fairman (WR).

Boys' doubles: #1 Cairncross/Flanigan 6-1, 6-0 over Meyers/Lascheck.

Mixed doubles: #1 Chandler/Curran (CS) 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 over Curran/Donovan (WR).

On Saturday the Wolverines played Blackfoot on home court and won 5-4 as Debree, Chrysikopolous and Fairman/Safran all extended their unbeaten streaks to 6-0 for the season. Debree and Chrysikopolous let up only 4 games combined on their way to victory.

Thomas Phelan won his #1 BS game, as did the MD team of Seth Curran and Kira Gardner.

Wood River 5, Blackfoot 4

GS: #1 DeBree over opponent 6-2, 6-0. #2 Chrysikopolous over opponent 6-1, 6-1. #3 Greenwood 3-6, 0-6 to opponent.

GD: #1 Fairman/Safran 6-3, 6-0 over opponents. #2 Rust/Doan 6-4, 0-6, 3-6 to opponents.

BS: #1 Phelan 7-5, 6-3 over opponent. #2 Fairman 2-6, 0-6 to opponent.

MD: #1 Kastner/DeBree 6-2, 4-6, 3-6 to opponents. #2 Curran/Gardner 7-6, 6-0 over opponents.
