Skate into spring

SpongeBob takes to the ice.

From the ice to the sea, Sun Valley has it covered. At 2 p.m. Sunday, April 17, the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club presents a season's end performance on ice called "Splash into Spring."

The show features many of the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club members from the youngest skaters, at age 4, who participate in the Skate With Us Program, to their most senior and experienced skater, Herman Maricich.

Maricich is the former director and professional at the Sun Valley Skating Center and is coming out of retirement for the event.

One year after the Sun Valley Lodge opened for its first winter season in 1936, the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club, was formed.

The Club, now one of the oldest in the country, held their first test session in 1956 and their first competition, created by Maricich, in 1966.

Over the years, the Club has hosted noted World and National judges.

Eight current club members are featured as soloists in "Splash into Spring," along with club professionals Darlin Baker and Gia Guddat. Other skaters appear in group performances as characters from the "Little Mermaid" song "Under the Sea."

The big star of the event, of course, and making his Sun Valley debut, is SpongeBob Square Pants. SpongeBob joins a bubble party with the Little Mermaids and many other guests aboard a sea cruise.

The club is hoping to make this an annual spring event. Tickets are available at the door for $ 5.
