Softballers snap losing streak, hit the win column twice

The Wood River softball team snapped a four-game losing streak and started a new mark for wins, by claiming both ends of a doubleheader against Sugar Salem Friday.

In their home opener, the Wolverines (3-4) downed the Diggers 14-4 in six innings and 13-10, which was called in four frames on account of darkness.

"We needed it and we played well enough to win," assistant coach Dale Martin said.

Pitcher Catherine Beck (2-4) hurled a complete game in the opener, allowing five hits, while striking out nine.

Hailey hitters were swinging a hot bat. Alexa Alberdi ripped three hits, scored three runs and had one RBI. Ali Sherbine belted two doubles, scored two runs and knocked in four runs.

Two-hit games were also turned in by Jamie Stone (2 runs) and Lisa Nilsen (4 RBI). Wood River had 10 hits in all and committed only one error in the field.

Trailing 8-3 in the nightcap, Wood River reeled off an eight-run third to lock down its third win of the season. Hailey had 10 hits, which managed to offset five errors by the defense.

Genii Vert (triple). Nilsen and Alberdi had two knocks and two runs each. Jamie Stone socked a two-run triple and scored twice.

Stone and Sherbine pitched two innings each, with Sherbine collecting the win.

"Sherbine pitched pretty well," Martin remarked.

On Thursday, Jerome capitalized on seven errors by the Wolverines to hang a 17-7 conference loss on visitors. Alberdi and Sherbine had two hits and runs apiece.

The Tigers tallied 10 unearned runs to send Hailey home after five frames.

"We had seven key errors and every one of them led to runs," Martin said. "That was a setback, but for now, I am satisfied for this early in the year. We just have to get better every game and build on that."

Wood River is in for a busy week. Home to Century on Tuesday, the Wolverines host Burley on Thursday, Twin Falls jayvee Friday and travel to Pocatello on Saturday.
