Election officials Laurie Tremble and Susan Ramsey help Clyde Doss register his vote Monday during the general election in Bellevue.

Bellevue residents voted Monday for a change in leadership.

In the annual general election, voters elected a new mayor and filled two of three open city council seats with new faces.

Of Bellevue's 994 registered voters, 227 voters or 23-percent of voters cast ballots at Bellevue City Hall.

In an uncontested election for mayor, Councilman Jon Anderson earned 182 votes.

Anderson succeeds Mayor John Barton, who did not seek re-election. With his election as mayor, Anderson leaves a vacant city council seat. When Anderson assumes the mayoral position in May, he will appoint a person to finish his city council term. The nominee must then be approved by the City Council.

The election for city council seats was a contrast to the uncontested mayoral race with five candidates vying for the three open seats. The terms of Councilman Eric Allen, Councilwoman Tammy Schofield-Eaton and Councilwoman Vivian Ivie were up for re-election. All three of the incumbent candidates ran for re-election, and were challenged by candidates Chris Koch and Shaun Mahoney.

Eaton garnered the greatest support from voters. She won 142 votes, earning a third term on the council. Eaton was the only incumbent candidate to earn another term.

Koch earned the second open seat with 127 votes. Mahoney won 117 votes to take the third seat by two votes.

Ivie received 115 votes and Allen obtained 84 votes.

The election results indicate a desire for change.

Mahoney offered a business minded approach to city issues. He also stressed the importance of instituting a capital investment plan and developing the city's infrastructure.

Koch, a two-year member of the Planning and Zoning Commission, spoke firmly against consolidating city services.

All of the terms carry a two-year term.

The elected officials will officially take their seats May 12.
