Hobson Memorial is back Sunday

Warm Springs race finale

Ski season is wrapping up on Baldy, which means it's time for the 28th annual Hobson Memorial Race and Picnic.

This year's event is scheduled for Sunday, April 10 on the Warm Springs side of Baldy.

It is open to junior racers of the Wood River Valley who are members of either the Hailey Ski Team or the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation.

Snowboarders are welcome, but they must race on skis, big feet or snow blades. Helmets are required of all participants.

Register and pick up your race bib Sunday from 9-10 a.m. at Warm Springs Lodge. The race start with a dual racing format (two runs per racer, fastest run scored) begins at 10:30 a.m. on Warm Springs.

Cost of $15 per racer includes barbecue lunch and race fee. The lunch for additional family members is available for purchase. It will be held along with the awards ceremony on the Warm Springs Lodge patio.

The Hobson family started the race in memory of their father, Roy L. Hobson, who passed away in 1960, and his daughter, Sheila Dorothy Hobson-Dolsot, who died in 1980.

Mrs. Dorothy Hobson-Krumm provides the trophies each year. It has become an excellent family event that serves as a final race and "end of season" party for many of the young athletes.

The Hobson Memorial Race and Picnic is run by parent volunteers, coaches and staff of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, with the support of Sun Valley Company.

Parent volunteers are always needed. Call Lenore Carroll at 622-3363. Children are expected to help with clean-up activities.

Besides the winners of the perpetual trophies—top time in each age group, boy and girl—who have their name inscribed on the Sun Valley Lodge trophy, other awards are given.

Sun Valley Ski Team "D" coaches recognize the boy and girl who have demonstrated excellent in achievement in development of skiing skills, sportsmanship and excellence in education with the Sigi and Peggy Engl awards, and Howard Dean awards.

Last year 133 skiers took part. Award winners were:

Overall male winner and Darrock Crookes Trophy—Cameron Minor. Female winner and Christin Cooper Trophy—Lauren Parsons.

Gretchen Fraser Award—Amanda Stelling. Pete Patterson Award—Tanner Farrow. Kathleen Harriman Mortimer Award—Hanna Curran. Billy Kleine Award—Riley Berman. Bonnie Russell Award—Calley Brown. Smith Goggle Award—Teton Brown. Pete Lane Trophy—John David Davidson. Susan Corrock Trophy—Daniele Maniere.
