Surf's up

Hawaiian Nationals and Tandem Telemark Challenge Saturday

Luckily snorkel gear qualifies as Hawaiian garb.

With all the new snow this week, racers in the Hawaiian Nationals and Tandem Telemark Challenge might need an underwater apparatus.

The race, part of the Sun Valley Telemark Series, is the final event of the 2005 season and caps the 25th year of competition for the series.

Racing takes place Saturday, March 26 on Baldy. The format is a two-run dual giant slalom starting at 10:30 a.m. on Cozy Run. Race registration is from 9-10 a.m. in the Warm Springs Lodge. Snowboarders are also welcome.

A post-race party with a disc jockey will be staged at Apples Bar & Grill at 4 p.m. Prizes up for grabs include Atomic skis, Black Diamond backcountry gear, a variety of jackets, and hoods from Smith Sport Optics and Scott USA. Awards will also be given to race winners, best-dressed participants, dead last, best fall and other categories. There will also be a raffle, which will benefit several local charities.

Kelly Odell of the Sun Valley/Ketchum Chamber and Visitors Bureau remarked, "It is a lot of fun and we encourage everyone to take part, or at least come out to enjoy the outfits and join in the fun."

Marmot sponsors the event.
