Tuesday was just a tough day all around for the Wood River softball team.
On the road at Mountain Home, the Wolverines (1-2) had to contend with unfavorable conditions and a composed Tigers' squad which was playing its fifth game of the season, compared to Hailey's third.
Paced by senior pitcher Michelle Reynolds (6 K's), the Tigers (2-3) knocked off the Wolverines 8-1.
Led by centerfielder Ashley Kipp (3-for-4, 5 RBI) and shortstop Ali Hillman (3-for-4), Mountain Home stroked eight hits and committed only one error. Hailey had four hits and two E's.
"I thought they played really well," Tigers' coach Joy Memmelaar said. "Defensively we did a good job. We made an error but didn't let it affect the rest of the game."
Trailing 5-0, Wood River plated its sole run in the third frame. Alexa Alberdi singled and scored on a RBI double by Jamie Stone. Lisa Nilsen and Sydney Leopold also had hits.
Junior hurler Catherine Beck struck out eight, but also issued eight base-on-balls and hit one batter.
"The umpire was not giving Beck her low pitch or the outside of the plate. He was working inside to the shoulder. She struggled a little bit with her control with it being so cold, wet and windy," Wood River coach Dale Martin said.
"But we're making progress and as soon as we get Ali Sherbine (injury) and Lauren Parsons (ski racing) back, we'll be in good shape."
