Gusts and Gooding no problem for Wolverines


On a cool and windy day at Gooding, the Wood River tennis team breezed by the Senators.

In their season-opener Tuesday, the Wolverines (1-0) knocked off the Senators 11-1, conceding only one match by forfeit.

Boys' singles champions were Thomas Phelan, Gavin Kastner and Pike Nuengsikapian.

Willie Meyers and Robbie Lascheck captured #1 boys' doubles.

District runner-up Hadley DeBree dropped just one game in a two-set victory in #1 girls' singles. Kira Gardner won #2 singles in straight sets, as did Anna Chrysikopoulos in #3 singles.

Abby Fairman and Jackie Safran emerged with a 6-1, 6-0 win in #1 girls' doubles. Gooding forfeited the #2 match.

In mixed doubles, Seth Curran and Danielle Donovan won 6-1, 6-0 and Connor Fairman and Alex Mallea prevailed 6-0, 6-0.

Wood River travels to Pocatello Saturday for match play against Pocatello and Century.

"We won't have a full boys' team, but we'll see how we do and what we've got," coach John Radford said.

The Wolverines first home match is Tuesday against Hillcrest.
