Parrish Memorial brings style, speed to Warm springs

Remembering an icon, all weekend long

By MICHAEL AMES
---

On two consecutive days, in two very different events held under very different conditions, the 13th annual Lane Parrish Memorial Race was staged on Baldy last weekend.

Part-time stunt man, male model, and speed and bump racer, Lane Parrish was a classic Sun Valley persona before a 1990 plane crash ended his life near Twin Falls. He was 33.

Each year, the Lane Parrish Memorial—part bumps, part Super G—is held in memory of the Sun Valley icon. This year's overall winners were Carl Rixon Jr. and Ali Maricich.

Saturday's moguls event saw bump racing return to its hot doggin' roots as 97 guys and gals bounced down Warm Springs's Race Arena.

Many were in classic 70s garb as the sun shined even while the wind howled above the mostly gust-proof course.

Racers were not timed in the retro display, but judged instead on style, form and cool air. Denim jackets, chrome reflective one-pieces, and tight sweaters hot dogged to the finish, performing countless spread eagles, daffies, and even worm roles along the way.

Sunday, temperatures peaked near 10 a.m. around 30 degrees before plummeting as dark clouds obscured any hope of afternoon sun.

By the time of the afternoon New Diamond Sun super giant slalom, speed-suited racers found themselves on a different, more demanding hill.

The SG course began with a flat start on Mid Warm Springs before dropping onto a steep Upper Greyhawk face, across to Hemingway, and finally curling back around to Lower Greyhawk for the finish.

Carl Rixon Jr. was the morning's fastest qualifier with a time of 69.78, a full three seconds better than runner-up and former national downhill king Skip Merrick. Zac Crist was .05 behind Merrick for third.

Kat Latham was the fastest woman Sunday morning, with a time of 82.11. Ali Maricich, 13, finished second and Katie Rothgeb ended up in third.

In the afternoon, the top five female finishers and top 15 male racers gathered for the New Diamond Sun.

In this "best of the best," Rixon took first place over Zac Crist by just under a second with a time of 69.67 to Crist's 70.78. Meanwhile, for the women, Ali Maricich's fresh legs held up to take first over Haley Reutimann with over a second difference.

Here is a summary of top results. For complete results with all the names check this week's Express Web site:
