Local racers ready to bang the gates on Baldy

Two technical events on tap this weekend

Young alpine skiers will have the opportunity to display their racing skills in a set of North Series technical events on Bald Mountain this weekend.

The Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation will hold the Monroe Cup slalom on Saturday, Feb. 26. The Hailey Ski Team will host the Lonnie Basolo Memorial giant slalom on Sunday, Feb. 27.

Both events are for J4/J5/J6 girls and boys (9-12) and will be held on the Warm Springs side of Baldy.

The Monroe Cup, named for longtime Sun Valley coach Lane Monroe, will be staged on Hemingway. The first run will start at 9:30 a.m. and the second at noon. The awards ceremony will be held on the patio of Apples Bar & Grill at 2:30 p.m.

Held in memory of former Hailey Ski Team member Lonnie Basolo, who died in a 1986 ski accident on Baldy, the giant slaloms will be run on Hemingway (boys) and Cozy (girls). Awards will be given out approximately 30 minutes after the second run at the Pump House below the scoreboard.
