Sing all the way to Baldy

The Wood River Jewish Community is presenting a "Broadway to Baldy" concert with mezzo soprano artist Marina Belenky, of Seattle, 5 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 20, at the Presbyterian Church of the Big Wood in Ketchum.

Belenky is an accomplished performer, conductor and teacher, and has the distinction of being one of the first Soviet émigré artists to study for the Jewish musical cantorate and to hold a cantorial position. She was vested from the Hebrew Union College in New York City in 1986. Belenky is considered one of the outstanding Cantors in the American Jewish world. Her rich, sonorous, mezzo soprano voice and profound musicality stir the spirit in audiences of all ages.

Her repertoire features music in Russian, Italian, Hebrew and Yiddish, as well as Broadway melodies such as "Some Enchanted Evening," "Somewhere," from West Side Story, and music from the hit musical "Milk and Honey."

Recently Marina was a featured soloist with the Seattle Symphony during their 100th Anniversary season.

Raised in Leningrad, Belenky graduated from the world famous Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory of Music in the Soviet Union. After arriving in the United States in 1979 she was awarded scholarships and continued her musical education at the Westchester Conservatory of Music in New York.

She served as the cantor of Temple Sinai of Stamford, Conn., for 11 years. She has been cantor at Temple De Hirsch Sinai in Seattle since July of 1999.
