Leif's race returns Saturday

Benefit for Matey family

The 14th annual Leif's Combined Championship races for alpine, Nordic and telemark enthusiasts will be held Saturday, Feb. 12 in Sun Valley.

It will be the first time that Leif's race has been staged since the death of the legendary Leif Odmark, who passed away of skin cancer June 21 at age 84.

Open to everyone, the race consists of a 10 a.m. giant slalom on Baldy and a 1 p.m. 5-kilometer or 10k Nordic race at Sun Valley Nordic Center. Awards will be presented at the Ketchum American Legion Hall at 5 p.m. Saturday.

An alpine and Nordic season pass donated by Sun Valley Company will be given away at the awards ceremony.

Register Saturday from 8-9 a.m. at Warm Springs Lodge ($30 adults, $15 juniors ages 18-and-under).

A portion of race proceeds will go to the Chris Matey family of Bellevue. Chris and Pam's son Jess Matey, 17, was injured in a rollover accident last June 17 and is making small improvements each week in his recovery process.

Saturday's awards ceremony will feature a raffle drawing for a Cabo weekend in Mexico, proceeds going to the Mateys. Purchase raffle tickets at these Ketchum locations—Hamilton Jewelers, Sheepskin Coat Factory, The Elephant's Perch, SV Nordic Center, Outabounds Lounge, Apple's Bar & Grill and The Casino.

Last year there were 67 participants. Winners were Tom Moss and Karoline Droege in alpine, and Ryan Casey and Gretchen Flint in telemark.
