Soldier Mountain north of Fairfield will be the site of next week's Sammis/Camas Cup downhills followed by the annual U.S. Ski Association Soldier Mountain downhill races.
Race organizer Ken Corrock announced the details Monday.
Open to anyone, the training camp conducted by Corrock and Karl Stingl is Monday, Feb. 14 starting at 9 a.m. at Soldier. Show up for registration from 8 a.m. on. Each racer will get six runs. Corrock said, "You'll learn downhill fundamentals and sectioning of courses."
The training camp is optional for those competing in next week's downhill races. Camp cost is $60 per person including lift ticket.
Tuesday's Sanmis/Camas one-run downhill usually attracts a field of about 100 local racers, Corrock said. Course inspection starts at 9 a.m. Training is in the morning and the downhill is in the afternoon. Entry fee is $30, plus $30 lift ticket, followed by awards.
Wednesday's Kenny Corrock USSA-sanctioned Soldier Mountain downhill is a two-run race, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Entry fees are the same and course inspection starts 9 a.m.
Corrock said, "Conditions are good skiing, but the course has been shortened to make it about a 65-second downhill. The top of Monument is bare, so we'll start just below the top."
