Spartans stifle Wood River

Great Basin West playoff game goes to Minico

The high seeds prevailed in the first round of the girls' Great Basin Conference West basketball tournament Tuesday.

#1 Minico notched a decisive 45-18 homecourt victory over fourth-ranked Wood River. The Spartans (7-0 league) held the Wolverines (3-17) scoreless in the first half, en route to their 16th victory of the season.

Syringa Stark posted 7 points for Hailey. Alexa Alberdi scored 3, Jamie Stone 3, Casey Vegwert 2, Laura Johnson 2, Lauren Morgenthaler 1.

#2 Burley (11-8) beat #3 Jerome (9-12) 37-28. Tied 15-all at halftime, the Bobcats outscored the Tigers 14-5 in the third quarter.

Last night, Wood River played at Jerome in a loser-our contest. Burley traveled to Minico for the winners' bracket semifinal.

Thursday's Wood River-Jerome winner faces the loser of Burley-Minico on Saturday at the high seed's homecourt. If Wood River won and Burley lost the game will be played at 1:30 p.m. at Burley.

The tournament championship is Monday with an if-necessary contest on Tuesday.
