Vacation rebound

Dietrich catches Cutthroats

The Community School girls' basketball team put together a couple of good quarters, but was unable to sustain the effort in a 62-41 Northside Conference loss to Dietrich at the Fish Tank Tuesday night.

"It's hard when you have been on vacation for two weeks," coach Ryan Waterfield remarked. "We did well against the press in the first half and then we stopped. I think we got tired."

The Cutthroats (1-5) played the Blue Devils even up in the first quarter with both teams scoring 12 points. But Dietrich, led by Caitlin Dill and Nicki Miller (17 points) got hot in the second frame, outscoring their host 17-7 for a 29-19 lead at halftime. Dill scored eight of her 17 points in the second quarter.

The Blue Devils (9-5) surge continued into the third and they dropped in 23 points to The Community School's 12.

"I think we lost confidence in the second half. It's hard to defend Dietrich. They are a well-rounded team," Waterfield said.

Caitlin Cairncross tallied six points in the third, but it was not enough to staunch the Blue Devils' offensive output. Although Dietrich only outscored the Cutthroats by five in the final frame, they cruised to a 26-point victory.

"No one is selfish on this team. We had great passing by Caitlin Enright and Gussi Ochi, and when they get better at taking shots we will have a more even scorebook," Waterfield said.

Jackie Goddard paced the Cutthroats with 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Blake Ellis tallied eight points and six assists. Ochi and Enright dropped in four points apiece.

The Cutthroats travel to Camas County to play the Mushers of Fairfield on Saturday.

"Camas always plays us tough. We need a good close game were we are challenged," Waterfield remarked.
