Ski racing debuts with Eric Hays gates

Eder podiums in GS


Intermountain Division Alpine ski racing for the 2004-05 season debuted last weekend with the running of the Eric Hays Memorial gate races on Payday run at Park City, Utah.

Some 150 men and 100 women tackled slalom gates Saturday and Sunday, then finished with giant slalom Monday and Tuesday. In the field were 47 from the Sun Valley and Hailey ski teams.

The best finishing local junior was Sun Valley's 16-year-old Lauren Eder, 11th and 12th overall in the slaloms and 4th and 5th in her J2 age class. Not far behind was Calley Brown, who cracked the top 20 overall and was 7th in the J2 ranks.

Monday, Eder put the pedal to the metal and podiumed with a third place of 88 female finishers in the giant slalom. She was second in the J2 class behind winner Kiley Staples of Rowmark Ski Academy.

Women's slalom winner was Alyssa Cartmill, 18, of Avon, Colo. and Rowmark.

Robin Sarchett, 30, of Hailey was 9th and 10th in SL behind the New England-based winners Paul McDonald, 20, of Dartmouth College and Issaquah, Wash., and Greg Hardy, 21, of University of Vermont. On Monday, Sarchett placed third overall .62 seconds behind race winner McDonald in the men's GS.

Here are weekend-best slalom placings for the local juniors on Payday, followed by another list of Monday's best GS placings for SV/HST skiers:
