Winterstart set for Saturday

Get out your skinny skis

The prayers have paid off for organizers of the 32nd annual Winterstart cross-country ski event at Galena Lodge. Copious amounts of snow this past week have ensured event will take place this Saturday, Dec. 11.

The Nordic skating event is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 11 at Galena Lodge 23 miles north of Ketchum. Registration is from 8:30-9:30 a.m. with wave starts kicking off at 10 a.m. Senate Meadows Loop just south of the Lodge will serve as the race course. Course distances are 7.5 kilometers (three laps), 5k (two laps) and 2.5k (one lap). The will also be a 1k kids' race. There is no entry fee, but donations will be accepted for the Sun Valley Junior Nordic ski team. The ski team will also have its annual calendar on hand for purchase.

You must have a North Valley Trails pass to join. Call The Elephant's Perch 726-3497, Galena Lodge 726-4010 or the SVSEF Nordic team at 726-3899 for details.

Last year there were 102 racers in the 7.5k, 5k, 2.5k and 1.5k events at Galena Lodge.

What SVSEF cross country director Rick Kapala likes about the race is that it is very low key.

"It gives everyone a chance to go out and have fun, and put on a race bib without having it be a big deal," Kapala said. "It is a great way for everyone to kick off the season."

SVST Nordic races on tap this month include the Holiday Skiathlon on Dec. 18 and the Christmas Relays on Dec. 19.
