Hailey wrestlers get down to business

Jerome, Wood River square off in opener

Wood River sophomore Murdock Miller air mails opponent Em Powell in the 135-pound class. Miller won by decision, 4-3.

The Jerome Tigers, with tough customers throughout their wrestling lineup, came into Hailey and posted a 53-23 Great Basin Conference West dual meet win over the Wood River Wolverines Tuesday in the 2004-05 prep mat opener.

Jerome, the defending District 4A district champs with 22 state qualifiers last February, chalked up eight pins in the 14 weight classes and added one forfeit victory over coach Danny Turner's Wolverines.

But Wood River's five wins were good ones.

Senior Greg Lyons, fourth at 189 pounds at the State 3A meet, was strong and well conditioned. It showed in his 11-6 triumph over Jerome's reigning district champion Britt Thiessen at 171 pounds.

Lyons fell behind 2-1 after one round, then posted a pair of reversals and a three-point near fall to grab an 8-4 lead. When Thiessen pulled to within two points in the third round, Lyons escaped and added a takedown to win 11-6.

At 135 pounds, Wood River sophomore Murdock Miller, last year's district king and state runner-up at 103 pounds, had a terrific, close-to-the-vest match with Jerome's Em Powell, who was sixth at State 4A at 125 pounds last February.

It was strength against stretch.

Powell rode Miller throughout the second, but "Doc" escaped at the end for a 3-1 lead. In the third round, Powell got a reversal with 16 seconds left for a 3-3 tie, but Miller wisely escaped and won the match 4-3.

In the lower weight classes, Wood River added a pair of encouraging wins from freshmen.

Wood River's 103-pounder Isaac Sherbine picked up Justin Rallison, slammed him down and pinned him at 1:31. Josh Christiansen, a ninth-grader at 119, had the quickest fall of the evening, 40 seconds over Jerome's Josh Nunes.

Another Hailey sophomore, Levi Stinnett, waged a hard-fought 160-pound battle with Jerome's Keith Blanc and pinned him at the second-period buzzer, the time 4:00.

Dropping their matches by pin were T.J. Squires 1:24 at 215, Dustin Selner 4:00 at 275 pounds, Jonathan Diem 1:02 at 112, Marcos Ugaz 1:10 at 130, Matt Libert 1:15 at 140, Jordan Vert 4:15 at 145, Tim Vert 4:27 at 152 and Collin Hand 2:52 at 189.

Wrestling well in their junior varsity debuts were sophomore Jesse Broadie, who pinned Jerome's Cody Herd at 1:30, and sophomore Donald Sluder, who recorded a 1:55 pin over Jerome's Patrick Lowe.

Wood River entertains Century and Challis tonight, Friday at 6 p.m. on the Hailey mat, then goes to Twin Falls Tuesday, Dec. 14 for another dual against a 5A school.
