Hot on Shoshone's heels in Northside

Carey's girls among the challengers

It's Shoshone and everybody else in the six-team Northside Conference girls' basketball league for 2004-05.

Someone will have to step forward and grab the second Northside berth to the 2005 State 1A tournament. The big question is, will it be Dietrich, Richfield, Carey or Camas County?

Defending Northside Conference champion Shoshone (93-16 four seasons) will be cruising along waiting for someone to challenge them—because they have unfinished work at state.

Shoshone landed in third place with a 22-6 record at the state tournament in 2003 and second behind undefeated Rimrock (26-0, 50 straight wins) in 2004. Rimrock handled the Indians (23-4) by a score of 47-36.

Only one player, Sarah Hubsmith, graduated from Shoshone, which had six sophomores including Katie Strunk and Hailey Harris on coach Tim Chapman's runner-up squad.

So Shoshone will be there. There's a solid chance that coach Gene Shaw's Dietrich Blue Devils (78-26 four seasons, fifth place at state in 2003) will be there as well—although Dietrich doesn't have much depth and lost four including Ayleen Sorensen from last year's Northside runner-up edition.

Young and willing, Carey and Richfield look ready to challenge.

Second-year Carey coach Hollis Pincock (8-12), also known as father of three-time Idaho "Player of the Year" Alyson Pincock of Borah High School, thinks the talented Panther juniors can play wonderful music with the seniors on the 11-player varsity.

Pincock is a third-year music teacher at Carey, and he's painfully aware that the Panthers lost three times to Richfield last winter and twice by 23 and 18 points to Dietrich.

But Carey's volleyball team had a successful fall season, joining Shoshone as Northside representatives to the State 1A tournament, and there's a good chance that Carey's competitiveness and team effort will carry over to the basketball court.

"All seven of our juniors comprise the nucleus of our team, with help from seniors like Melissa Peck who will provide leadership," said Pincock.

Not blessed with much height, Carey will "spread the floor and hopefully get up and down the court quickly," said Pincock. "We'll see who can run the offense and who wants to play. We'll play good, hard defense."

The seniors are wing Melissa Peck (3.7 ppg), wing Shannon Roesbery, wing Brooke McAfee and Jessica Gomez. Only Melissa Peck played substantial varsity minutes last winter.

Pincock has three junior post players—5-7 Brenna Silva, 5-7 Amy Olsen (3.6 ppg) and 5-4 Whitney Peck (5.9 ppg). Silva was a junior varsity player last year. Whitney Peck "is short at 5-4, but she plays tall," said Pincock.

Returning at guards are Carey's leading shooters from last year, both juniors. They are 5-4 point guard Jessica Royal (10.0 ppg with 27 3-pointers) and shooting guard Lacey Peterson (8.9 ppg with 13 3-pointers).

Wings Amanda Hill and RayAnne Hennefer, both juniors, round out this year's Carey varsity squad. The Panthers will try to improve on last year's averages of 40.6 ppg on the offensive end and 45.0 ppg defense.

Meanwhile, Carey's first home game opponent Richfield (17-10 last year) made the state tournament as the fifth team from the Magic Valley. The Tigers had four freshmen on that state team including returning anchors Angela Kent and Cassie Wood.

Pincock said about the teams chasing Shoshone, "Dietrich will be tough. Richfield is making a lot of noise—but I like it when someone else makes a lot of noise. Camas County may surprise. And nobody knows about The Community School."

The season is already underway, successfully, for the Panthers.

Friday, Carey (1-0) opened its 18-game campaign with a 36-11 non-league win over Cole Valley in Boise. Brenna Silva (9 points) and Whitney Peck (7) led Carey. Other scorers were Lacey Peterson 5, Melissa Peck 4, Jessica Royal 4, Amy Olsen 3, Shannon Roesbery 2 and Brooke McAfee 2.

Carey visits Dubois for a game against the Clark County Bobcats Thursday, Nov. 18. First home game is Thursday, Dec. 2 against Richfield.

The seven players on the junior varsity squad coached by Vee Peterson are Serene Bingham, Cassie Weaver, Naomi Harmon, Emily Olsen, Allison Shaffer and Sarah Lebrecht, plus the lone freshman, Jennifer Cenarrusa.
