Gridders garner post-season awards

Reynoso named Fourth District Defensive Player of the Year


Plowing through 20 gallons of ice cream with all the toppings, the Wood River football team finished off the season with a ?pigskin pigout? party Wednesday night.

Held in the commons area at the high school, Dale Martin and staff honored the team for its perseverance and determination throughout the season.


?They played hard and never quit,? Martin remarked.

Senior Max Kessler was honored with the Bob Shay Most Inspirational award. He was also named Offensive Lineman of the Year. Most Improved went to Chris Chandler.

Senior Craig Werley grabbed the ?Big Hit? award and was Defensive Back of the Year.

Other Players of the Year at their position were Huston Brashears (offensive back), Dustin Selner (defensive lineman), and Tyson Reynoso (linebacker).

Sophomore Travis Beckman was named Scout Team Player of the Year.

With 117 solo tackles and 55 assists, Tyson Reynoso was chosen Fourth District Defensive Player of the Year.

First-team All-League honors also went to Selner (defense), Reynoso (linebacker), Kessler (offensive line), and Dema Springs (kicker).

Second-team designates were Werley (defensive back), Chris Santiago (linebacker), Tyler Jackson (punter), Carl Browning (tight end) and Brashears (running back).

A special program the team participates in is the Gatorade Program, which gives stellar seniors from each state a shot at a $5,000 college scholarship.

Gatorade Defensive Player of the Year went to Reynoso. Brashears, a junior, was Offensive Player of the Year. Sophomore Corbin Minard was Rookie of the Year. Special teams Player of the Year was given to senior Billy Kramer. Junior Carl Browning earned the Will to Win award.
