Wood River (17-1-1) reaps post-season honors

Driscoll chosen top player

Conference Player of the Year Margii Driscoll scoring one of her team-high 22 goals.

The announcement of All-Conference players and other team awards highlighted Wednesday?s annual fall banquet of the Wood River High School girls? soccer program held at Rico?s in Ketchum.

Wood River?s varsity (17-1-1, 70 goals scored, 4 goals against) ended an excellent fall season as the State 4A tournament consolation champions. In its first year at 4A, Wood River also earned Great Basin West and Great Basin Conference championships.

First-year varsity coach Greg Gvozdas shared "Coach of the Year," honors in the Great Basin West along with Minico coach Armando Tapia.

Wood River junior striker Margii Driscoll (22 goals season with 5 assists, 38 goals career) was selected as Great Basin "Player of the Year."

Driscoll, given the team award by Gvozdas as "Top Goal Scorer," was one of five Wolverines chosen as first team All-Conference. In all, 12 Wolverine players were honored as members of the conference All-Star team.

First-teamers were Driscoll, sophomore midfielder Kaitlin Gasenica, junior sweeper Katie Jensen, senior goalkeeper Jessi Pieschl and sophomore defender Danielle Smith.

On the second All-League team were Calley Brown, Brianna Hull-Mullins, Ireland King and co-captain Gina Thomas. Honorable mention went to Kacie Femling, co-captain Ashley Mardian and Erin McQueen.

Gvozdas announced two other awards at Wednesday?s banquet. The Coaches? Award went to goalkeeper Jesse Pieschl. The Most Inspirational winner was Ashley Mardian.

Leading goal scorers were Driscoll 22, Ireland King 9, Tara Cappel 6 and Kaitlin Gasenica 6. Those with the most assists were Calley Brown 7, Ireland King 6, Kaitlin Gasenica 5 and Driscoll 5. Pieschl, Danielle Smith and Katie Jensen started all 19 games.

Junior varsity coach Doug Stouffer awards for his 10-4-2 squad that had "a good, strong season," he said.

MVP was co-captain Michelle McMurdo and the Leadership Award went to co-captain Grayson Palmer. The Top Gun award for most goals went to Kaitlyn Farrington (10 goals). Most Improved was Hannah Fuller.
