WR Journal apologizes for article

By MEGAN THOMAS
Express Staff Writer

The Wood River Journal publicly extended an apology for copyright violations against the Idaho Mountain Express and Guide. The apology appeared as a display advertisement printed in Wednesday, Oct. 27 editions of the Idaho Mountain Express and the Wood River Journal.

?The apology speaks for itself. There is no other comment available,? Idaho Mountain Express Publisher Pam Morris said.

The apology concerns an article that detailed awards given to Wood River High Students involved in extra-curricular activities.

Speaking to the resemblance of the Journal article to the Express story, the apology stated, ?The similarities were improper and should not have occurred.?

The Idaho Mountain Express published the story, ?Top student athletes honored at Shay banquet,? on May 21, 2004. A reporter for the Express wrote the article. A similar article ?Hailey Ceremony Awards? appeared in the Wood River Journal on May 26.

The statement acknowledged wrongdoing by stating the following: ?The use of previously published material from another copyrighted publication without permission was an unacceptable violation of both fair journalistic practices and of the ethical and professional standards of both the Wood River Journal and its parent company, Lee Enterprises.?

The publisher of the Wood River Journal did not return a phone call concerning the matter.
