Quick exit for Hailey boys

At state soccer

Two-and-out was the disappointing outcome for the highly-regarded Wood River High School boys? varsity soccer team (15-3-1) during last week?s State 4A tournament in Meridian.

Boise-area champion Skyview of Nampa defeated Wood River 3-1 in Thursday?s opening round, then Great Basin Conference titlist Burley ousted the Wolverines 2-0 Friday.

Skyview (12-4-2) never scored another goal, losing 2-0 to Sandpoint and 1-0 to Nampa. Burley (15-4-2) captured the consolation championship over Moscow for the second consecutive year, 3-2 in overtime Saturday.

Winning the 4A tournament for the third time in four years was Sandpoint (17-4-1) by a 1-0 score over Blackfoot Saturday. Sandpoint never allowed a goal at state, outscoring foes 5-0 including a 2-0 win over Burley.

Her team played hard, but nothing really clicked at state for the Wolverines of first-year coach Farrell Swain.

Skyview?s Rudy Valadez, a junior, scored two goals and junior Jesue Lopez added a single for the Hawks. Carl Jablonski scored what turned out to be Wood River?s final goal of 2004.

Wood River senior Willie Meyers, so hot on offense down the season?s homestretch, suffered a hip pointer against Skyview and didn?t play in Friday?s loser-out game against Burley.

Playing for the fourth time this season, Burley and Wood River waged a very physical battle on a wet field.

The Wolverines never recovered from a Bonifacio Sanchez header at three minutes, then top Bobcat scorer Eduardo Anguiano got behind the defense and drilled the second goal at 32 minutes. Burley out-shot Wood River 9-6 in the close-to-the-vest war.

Giving Wood River a big lift was the aggressive play of sophomore Taylor Sundali, who tightly marked Sanchez throughout the game. The defense of Hailey sweeper Sagen Howard also helped keep the game close.

Wood River senior goalkeeper Kristian Timmons bruised his leg making a sliding second-half save on Sanchez and eventually had to leave the game for treatment.

For Wood River (24-26-2 in 17 state tourney trips), it was only the fifth time that a Hailey team didn?t come away with a victory at state.

Meanwhile, the McCall-Donnelly Vandals (17-2-2) won their first-ever State 3A boys? championship with a 5-0 victory over American Falls Saturday. The Vandals went 3-0 and outscored opponents 16-0 at state.

Leading the charge for the Vandals was senior Jared Bork, the leading scorer for the entire boys? tournament with 7 goals. Bork is a son of Hailey resident Russ Bork. And one of 10 Vandal seniors was Jess Quarton, son of former Hailey residents Barr and Ginger Quarton.

Here?s a Wood River wrap-up:

Overall record: 15-3-1 (8-1-1 home, 7-2 away, 6-0 league, #1 seed). Offense: 64 goals (3.4). Defense: 20 goals (1.1).
