Cutthroats wrap up 9-5 soccer season

Girls win once at state

The Community School girls? soccer team got a good idea of where it wants to be during last week?s State 3A tournament at Meridian.

Coach Kelly Feldman?s Cutthroats (9-5) just need more defense to play with the likes of 3A powers American Falls, Payette and McCall-Donnelly.

Payette (20-3) trounced the Cutthroats 7-1 in Thursday?s opener and proceeded to settle for second place with a 2-1 overtime loss to American Falls (18-2-1) in Saturday?s title game.

It was the second consecutive state title for American Falls, which outscored opponents 66-11 including 16 shutouts during the 2004 campaign.

Meanwhile, 2001-02 state champ McCall-Donnelly (13-8-2) bounced back from its 2-1 loss to American Falls Thursday and won the consolation championship Saturday by a 4-0 score over The Community School.

Seniors Erin Brundige and Michelle Dorris scored the first two goals, the Dorris goal coming on a nice feed from junior forward Natalie Hatfield, and Hatfield made it 3-0 at half-time. Sophomore Bailey Woods tallied the fourth goal for McCall after the half.

Cutthroat highlight of the rainy three days in Meridian was Friday?s 6-0 triumph over Shelley. Cassidy Doucette scored four goals to finish with a school season record 24 goals and 41 for her career?trailing only all-time leader Langely McNeal (51).

Doucette, a senior, tallied two goals in each half. Sara Berman and Ross Mills added singles. Assists went to Cody Curran and Krista Detwiler.

Coach Feldman said she was pleased with the Sun Valley defensive effort against Shelley. ?We really shut them down and they had our respect?Shelley deserved to be here.?

The Cutthroats will announce season-ending honors at tonight?s Fall Sports Banquet at 6:30 p.m. in the Limelight Room of Sun Valley Inn.

Overall record: 9-5 (5-0 home, 4-5 away, 6-0 league, #1 seed). Offense: 45 goals (3.2). Defense: 26 goals (1.9). Individual scoring: Cassidy Doucette 24 goals (41 career), Sara Berman 8, Ross Mills 4, Chloe Lynn 2, Mandy Alexander 2, Lexie Praggastis 2, Cody Curran 2, Krista Detwiler 1.
