Carey spikers headed to state

Open Thursday against Troy

Going to state volleyball is a new thing for the Carey School varsity volleyball team, which hasn?t visited the State 1A competition since 1999.

But the Panthers of first-year coach Kathy Whitworth are looking forward to the opportunity of playing in the 16-team tournament starting with pool play Thursday, Oct. 28 at Declo High School gym.

Carey (20-6 overall, 13-4 away) hasn?t played any of the three teams in its pool?Troy, Garden Valley and North Gem?and that?s probably a good thing, Whitworth said.

About her players, she said, ?They seem to do better when they face teams they haven?t played before. They seem to be more relaxed. For instance we were really calm when we played Oakley last week and we did very well.?

Having qualified for state with a four-game victory over Dietrich last Wednesday at ISDB gym in Gooding, Carey returned to Gooding High School Thursday and polished off Oakley 25-6, 25-20, 25-19 in the Northside/Southside third-place match for state seeding.

?Our offense has been coming on lately and our hitters are gaining confidence,? Whitworth said. Amy Olsen (8 kills), Whitney Peck (5), Jessica Royal (4) and Brenna Silva (4) paced the attackers against Oakley.

RayAnne Hennefer (12 assists, 3 aces) and Brooke McAfee (7 assists) set up the offense. Dishing out aces on the serving line were Olsen (2), Peck (2) and Royal (2). Leading diggers on defense were Royal (20 digs), Olsen (15), Peck (13) and Lacey Peterson (11).

Carey has a very tough opening-match pool-play draw Thursday at 12:30 p.m. in Troy, this year?s third-place team out of north Idaho. Troy is the two-time defending State 1A champion and winner of seven state titles in the last nine years.

The teams with the best pool-play records advance to the final eight for the double elimination tournament Friday and Saturday at Declo.
