Sun Valley sinks Bliss 1-0

Still alive in playoffs, hosts Wendell today

The Community School boys? soccer team gave coach Richard Whitelaw a late birthday present Wednesday ? his 150th victory at the helm of the Cutthroats.

In the 3A Fourth District playoffs, Sun Valley slipped Bliss 1-0 at Browning Field. A first-half goal by senior Bobby Flanigan held up for the win. ?It was end-to-end action with a lot of shots, but as time wound down, I started thinking, maybe one goal will do it,? Whitelaw remarked.

The win marked the seventh time the Cutthroats have shutout their opponent this season.

?Regan (O?Reilly) pulled off a few good saves,? Whitelaw said in his typical understated fashion.

Man of the Match went to seniors Flanigan, Reed Boeger, Connor Wade and Ben Roth.

The Cutthroats (9-3-2) need one more win to earn a spot in next week?s 3A State soccer tournament. Sun Valley will host Wendell at 4:00 p.m. today, Friday, Oct. 22. In two previous meetings this season, the teams have tied 1-1 and the Trojans won 1-0.

?Whoever wants it the most will win it,? Whitelaw summed up.
