Wood River was rocking and Minico was reeling by halftime of a Great Basin conference showdown in Hailey Tuesday.

Facing a do-or-die situation, the Wolverines grabbed destiny by the horns and hammered the Spartans 6-0, scoring five goals in the first half.

Before the game, coach Farrell Swain told her team to seize the early momentum.

?Don?t even let them think they can be in this game,? she remarked.

Hailey responded immediately. Two minutes into the match, Willie Meyers scored the first of his three goals. Carl Jablonski chipped in two and junior varsity call-up Spencer Flade stuffed a solo shot.

?We played our game and took it to them,? Swain said with satisfaction.

With the victory, Wood River (12-1-1) finished in second place in the Fourth District 4A tournament and needs two more wins to advance to state.

The Wolverines dueled Preston at Burley yesterday in the 4B/5B playoff game. A win secures a slot in the state play-in game against the Sixth District runner-up, in Pocatello Saturday, Oct. 23 at 2:30 p.m.

?I think (the win against Minico) is a good boost for the rest of the week,? Swain said.
