Carey volleyball going to state

Rally past Blue Devils

For the first time in five years, the Carey School volleyball team is going to the State 1A tournament.

Coach Kathy Whitworth?s Panthers (19-6) rallied past the Dietrich Blue Devils 14-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-21 Wednesday in Gooding to earn the Northside Conference?s second berth to the Oct. 28 state meet in Burley.

Earlier Wednesday, last year?s state runner-up Shoshone (26-2) won the Northside title 25-14, 25-14, 25-20 over Carey. But the Panthers played well against Shoshone, Whitworth said.

"We played good defense and didn?t lay down," she said.

Solid defense carried over to the loser-out match against Dietrich (17-7). Although the Blue Devils won the first game, Carey geared up its offense and swept the next three games to prevail.

Jessica Royal (12 serves, 4 aces) and Brooke McAfee (16 serves) each served six winners in the 25-16 second-game win. Royal (8 kills) added three kills. Brenna Silva (8 kills) had three kills in the 25-22 third-game win, then Amy Olsen (7 kills) provided a big lift by serving nine winners in the decider.

"We dug just about everything against Dietrich and our offense hit the ball pretty well," Whitworth said.

Other Carey contributors were Whitney Peck (10 kills, 18 digs) and RayAnne Hennefer (20 assists, 21 digs, 7 serves). On defense, Royal (30 digs), Olsen (20), Lacey Peterson (19) and Peck (18) kept the floor clean.

Carey played Oakley Thursday night for state tournament seeding.
