Solar Sox in Arizona

A Sun Valley senior baseball team will be competing for the sixth straight year in the Men?s Senior Baseball League World Series in Arizona.

The Sun Valley Solar Sox sponsored by The Waxroom have six Central Division games scheduled from Oct. 25-28 in the Phoenix area.

On the team are Craig Anderson, Curtis Bacca, Paul Creighton, Pat Creighton, David Fox, Dan Freeman, Jimmy Jorgensen, Sean Moran, Brian Nelson, Jeff Poggi, Robin Sarchett and Danny Turner.



Middle school runners

Seventeen Wood River Middle School runners joined the fun in the district finals Oct. 12 at the 1.9-mile distance on Gooding Golf Course. It ended the inaugural season for the runners coached by Stephen Poklemba and Erik Larson.

Maddie Cordovano led Hailey with a 10th-place finish out of 65 girls. Others were: 13?Bronwen Raff. 25?Madison Deffe. 28?Anita Vorsteveld. 35?Maegan Reedy. 45?Kat Pettingill.

The Wolverine boys had their best team effort of the season (second place, just 7 points behind Jerome), led by Michale Brunker?s seventh place out of the 87 boys. Others were: 12?Scotty Phelan. 13?Daniel Henry. 19?Travis Job. 33?Bradley Dobie.

Jordan Niedrich, Sam Colesworthy, Greg LeBlanc, Max Bates, Luke Poster, Miles Santos-Vercelli and Matt Farley all engaged in their own mini-races with nearest competitors, making all finishes a sight worth seeing.



Whitney Richards at UAB

Redshirt freshman Whitney Richards, a Bellevue resident and former Wood River High School All-State volleyball player, played well defensively for the Birmingham-Southern Panthers (9-8, 3-2 league) in their 30-23, 25-30, 30-19, 32-30 victory over Charleston Southern (6-9, 2-5) Saturday at Charleston, S.C.

Richards, a 5-8 defensive specialist for coach Tonya Charland, tallied 11 digs for the Big South Conference NCAA Division 1 Panthers.

Majoring in education at UAB, Richards was Wood River?s co-valedictorian when she graduated from the Hailey school in 2003. She was All-State and team MVP as a Wolverine senior in 2002.



?Girls on the Run? event

Join ?Girls on the Run,? girls, family and friends for a 5-kilometer fun run Saturday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. starting from The Heatherlands clubhouse in Ohio Gulch. The 3.1-mile course will go along the bike path to East Fork and back. Let your coach know by Thursday, Oct. 14 if your girl needs a running buddy.
