Headmaster announces retirement

After nearly two decades guiding The Community School as a leader, teacher and friend, Jon Maksik recently announced he plans to retire as headmaster at the end of the 2006 school year.

?It?s been a life,? Maksik said.

Maksik arrived at The Community School from Los Angeles in 1987. Upon his retirement, he will have spent 19 years as head of the school. His contributions include adding an elementary school and beginning classes, overseeing campus renovations and shepherding the Sagewillow Campus into the school.

Through the school?s physical changes, Maksik has maintained the character of the school.

?The spirit of the school is essentially unchanged,? he said, highlighting the intellectual curiosity, confidence and sense of ethics predominant among the students, faculty and staff.

?It?s absolutely a unique school. If I have contributed at all to that, it satisfies me and makes me proud,? Maksik said.

Maksik?s contributions to the intangible character of the school begin as he greets and holds the door for kindergarten students every morning. Despite rain or snow, Maksik stands by the door in the morning to welcome the young students. He maintains this influential presence throughout the years handing graduates their diplomas upon graduation.

The Board of Trustees is selecting a national search firm to find a new headmaster. According to Maksik, the search will involve the board, parents, faculty, staff and students.

?The transition will happen the way it should happen,? he said.
