Still building toward its goal of making the state tournament, The Community School took a step in the right direction with a 3-0 homefield victory over Wendell Wednesday.

Shaking off the cobwebs after a nearly two week break, the Cutthroats (6-2, 6-0 league) scored only one goal in the first half off a bender by Cassidy Doucette.

Lanes were hard to find as the Trojans jammed eight in the box, and goalkeeper Tami Goedhart played a great game between the pipes with eight saves in the second half alone.

?Wendell has come a long way, and their goalie was probably the best player on the team. She was all over the place,? Cutthroat coach Kelly Feldman remarked.

While the Cutthroat offense did not get untracked until the second half (Sun Valley won its first game against Wendell, 5-1), what Feldman was really interested in was seeing her defense perform.

?I know my offense can score. (The Cutthroats took 26 shots.) What I was really looking for was defense,? Feldman remarked.

Spearheaded by senior sweeper Lexie Pragasstis, the Cutthroats blanked the Trojans on both the scoreboard and shots on net.

?They supported each other and came up for the ball,? Feldman said.

Gaining momentum and field position in the second half, left midfielder Chloe Lynn tracked down her own rebound in the box, cut through two defensemen and scored 17 minutes into play for a 2-0 lead.

With three minutes remaining, Doucette trapped the ball at the top of the box and wheeled to find twine for a 3-0 final.

Feldman summed up, ?We played a full 40 minutes in the second half. We had some real highlights. Emily Eshman subbed in and had two great shots (one hit the post). Chloe played great and so did Mandy (Alexander). But we haven?t really got the complete game yet.

?Overall, we haven?t peaked yet, which is good. Our goal is to put it together when it counts ? at state.?

Coming up: The Cutthroat girls play at Twin Falls (6-7) Saturday, Oct. 9 at 3:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, Oct. 13, The Community School and Wood River will face each other in the final game of the regular season. Game time is 5 p.m. in Sun Valley. Seniors Gussi Ochi, Cassidy Doucette and Lexie Pragasstis will be making their final home appearance of the regular season.
