Wood River jams Jerome, 3-0

McCann twines two

It was a less than polished performance for a gem of a team at Jerome Wednesday, but when the chips were down, Wood River managed to cash in.

In Great Basin League action, the Wolverines (10-0-1, 5-0 league) blanked the Tigers 3-0, but coach Farrell Swain was not exactly thrilled after the game.

Swain ran down the list.

?We did not play well. Our touch was off. We didn?t connect. We got down on each other. We held the ball too long and we didn?t score until the 33rd minute.?

Coming off the bench in the first half, Willie Meyers dribbled through the Tigers? defense and converted for a 1-0 advantage, which held up thoughout. The Wolverines limited the Tigers to three shots, but Swain said, ?they had more opportunities than that.?

At halftime, Swain instructed her team to be more positive and distribute the ball in a simple manner. It worked.

Audie McCann (15 goals) scored twice in 13 minutes on passes by Meyers and Byron Epp to ice the victory.

?In a 20-game season, you are going to play a bad game,? Swain said. ?We?ve got to put it behind us and gear up to play on Tuesday.?

The district?s regular-season champion will be determined next week on the Hailey pitch.

Wood River holds its ?Senior Night,? Tuesday, Oct. 12 against Burley (8-2-2, 3-1 league) at South Valley Sports Complex soccer field.

Wood River seniors playing their final regular-season game Tuesday will be co-captains Sagen Howard and Ted Dankanyin along with Reno Christino, Levi Crandall, Manuel Serrato, Kristian Timmons, Epp and Meyers.

The Fourth District 4A tournament opens Thursday, Oct. 14.
