Carey grid team back in action

At Rockland today

The Carey School football team will try to stretch its winning streak to four games when the Panthers invade Rockland today, Wednesday at 4 p.m. for a non-division game.

Carey (3-1, 1-0 Sawtooth Conference West) travels to Rockland for the renewal of a long rivalry with the Bulldogs of coach Steve May (2-3, 2-0 Sawtooth East). May?s teams boast a 65-34 record over 10 seasons.

?Rockland is always a good game for us,? said Carey coach Lane Kirkland.

After dropping its first two games to Magic Valley Conference foes Oakley 44-12 and Raft River 56-8 and then losing at home to Camas County 46-0, Rockland beat Clark County 22-6 and whipped Sho-Ban 42-20.

Kirkland said, ?Rockland?s best weapon is their quarterback, junior Andy Nelson. They also have tall ends, 6-5 and 6-6, and some big guys in the middle of the line.

?We?ll have to tackle real well and try to cause fumbles in our pass coverage after Rockland makes the catch. And we have some new stuff to get (QB) Tyler Cook in the open field away from their tall ends.?

Rockland dominated the rivalry with five straight wins from 1986-90. But lately it?s been quite different.

Last year in Carey, the Panthers scored four of the final five TDs to beat Rockland 26-20, after trailing 14-0 in the first period. Randy Lundergreen (16 carries for 121 yards) broke free for the decisive 55-yard TD run with 1:33 left, breaking a 20-20 tie. Carey rushed for 222 yards.

It was Carey?s 13th win the last 14 games against Rockland, the only exception being the 1996 game won by host Rockland 38-0 that snapped Carey?s streak of 36 consecutive Sawtooth Conference victories.

On its last visit to Rockland, in 2002, Carey rallied from a 14-12 deficit to beat the Bulldogs 40-20. Shawn Hennefer?s 105-yard interception return sparked the Carey comeback.
