Swimmers pull upset, win Twin Falls meet

First-ever meet victory for WRHS girls


With all the big city schools competing in Saturday?s Twin Falls High School Swim Invitational meet, nobody thought too much of the chances of Hailey?s Wood River High School.

Nobody, that is, except the nine girls on the determined Hailey team.

Wood River defied the odds and won its first-ever high school meet, amassing 367 points to beat Idaho Falls (273), Skyline of Idaho Falls (229) and host Twin Falls (213) for first in the 13-school invitational.

At Twin Falls YMCA pool, Wood River?s girls won six of the 24 events. Gold medals went to juniors Amanda Harris (200-yard freestyle) and Anja Sundali (200 individual medley) along with freshmen Natalie Hague (50 free) and McKenna Collins (100 breast).

Harris captured her freestyle race by over 12 seconds and Sundali was an eight-second winner in the 200 IM. Hague and Collins went 1-2, just .30 seconds apart, in 50 free. Collins captured 100 breast by over four seconds.

Taking another second place for Wood River was Harris (100 fly) while individual thirds went to Hague (100 free) and Sundali (100 backstroke).

In addition, Wood River won the 400-yard and 200-yard freestyle relays. On the 400 relay team, a winner by 10 seconds, were Sundali, Hague, Collins and Harris. The same foursome captured the 200 by 20 seconds.

Third place in the 200 freestyle relay went to Wood River?s ?B? squad of Lacey Werley, Taylor Straley, Stormy Mataya and Taryn Bryson.

In fourth was the girls? 200-yard medley relay team of Werley, Taryn Bryson, Rachael Becker and Straley.

Meanwhile, Wood River sent only two boys to the one-day meet but stilll finished seventh of 16 clubs with 34 points, behind first-place Idaho Falls (433) and Twin Falls (316).

Ray Bryson, Wolverine junior, captured silver medals with second places in 200 IM and 500 freestyle.

Other best-of-meet placings for Wood River were: 5?Lacey Werley 50 free and Rachael Becker 500 free. 6?Stormy Mataya 500 free. 11?Taylor Straley 50 free. 16?Taryn Bryson 100 breast. 18?Neil Player 50 free.
