Lengthy winning streaks continued last week for the Wood River High School and Community School girls? varsity soccer teams.

Coach Greg Gvozdas? Wolverines (8-0-1, 3-0 league) stayed unbeaten and unscored-upon in their three league games to date with a 3-0 home win over Burley Thursday in Hailey.

And coach Kelly Feldman?s Cutthroats (5-2, 5-0 league) made it four consecutive wins with a 3-1 league road victory at Declo Friday. The Cutthroats own their league foes, having outscored them 24-3 to date.

Wood River, ranked second in Idahosports.com 4A state rankings behind Emmett (11-1-1) out-shot Burley 37-3 and just had a hard time finishing.

Hailey?s girls, out-shooting Burley 16-1, led 1-0 at half.

Sweeper Katie Jensen made a rare but effective offensive foray that ended with a perfect lead pass to Margii Driscoll at the 24-minute mark. Driscoll banged a cross pass off a Burley player for her team-leading 11th goal of the season.

Another stalwart defensive player, Danielle Smith, did it all for the second goal 15 minutes into the second half. She deftly passed the ball to herself, through the legs of a Bobcat defender, then sent a twisting kick that found the net behind the screened goalkeeper.

Smith?s first varsity goal gave Wood River a 2-0 lead.

Two minutes later, Wood River goalkeeper Jessi Pieschl stopped a Burley flurry by crawling across the goalmouth and making an incredible save at the corner of the cage.

Kaitlin Gasenica started the third and final goal with a pass to Driscoll. Margii then delivered a pass to Brianna Hull-Mullins, who scored her second goal of the season at the 73-minute mark for the 3-0 final.

Down at Declo, Cassidy Doucette (12 goals) punched home a pair of goals and Lexie Praggastis added a single in The Community School?s 3-1 victory over Declo?s Hornets.

The Community School is idle because of school trips until it hosts Wendell Oct. 6 on the Elkhorn field, but Wood River faces one of its biggest weeks of the 2004 soccer campaign.

Wood River goes to Minico Thursday, Sept. 30 for another important league game, then the Wolverines entertain Century Saturday, Oct. 2 for an 11 a.m. varsity game in Hailey. The two highly-regarded teams tied 0-0 on Sept. 16 in Pocatello.
