One mountain, 196 to the top

26th annual Baldy Hill Climb

Saturday?s women?s champion, Adrienne Leugers, set a new women?s record at 42:43. Leugers has now won six straight Baldy Hill Climbs and boasts an amazing 11 first places in 17 years. Photo by Willy Cook

On a picture-perfect fall morning, 196 local men, women and children, ranging in age from 9 to 67, with an average age of 38, decided to race and hike up Ketchum?s Bald Mountain Saturday.

The event was the 26th annual Baldy Hill Climb staged by the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation.

This year?s winner with a time of 37:03, was Whit Albright, 34, who recaptured his 2001 title after two years running up behind Ryan Schmidt.

?It was Whit?s fastest Baldy Hill Climb time,? said organizer Rick Kapala. Second place went to Bill Nurge in 37:55.

Saturday?s women?s champion, Adrienne Leugers, 45, set a new women?s record at 42:43 and finished 12th overall, bettering her 21st-place finish in 2003. Leugers has now won six straight Baldy Hill Climbs, with 11 first places in 17 years.

?It was a cool thing for Adrienne to finally get the record,? said Kapala, who said that the recent rainfalls probably quickened the course and stabilized the footing. Runner-up among the women was Brooke Baughman, 32, with a time of 45:14.

What possesses Baldy Hill Climbers to do what they do is as diverse as the crowd itself. For some it?s the natural high when they reach the top. For others, a conquest of nature.

Whatever the reason, every fall since 1979?when 54 racers reached the top?Ketchum?s boldest scurry up the mountain that ties the town together.

Of this year?s top ten finishers, the range of ages was astounding. For men, the top ten included three finishers under 17 years, two in their 30s, and five men over 40 years of age.

The top M2 finisher was John King, 29, at 15th in 44:33. Del Pletcher, 60, finished first in M6 (over 60) at 16th place with 44:34, just over four minutes behind his son, Reid Pletcher, 16, coming in fifth overall with 40:46.

Miles Fink-Debray, 16, formerly of the Sun Valley Ski Team, was the top M1 male, placing third overall with 38:12.

Among the hikers, Andy Andrews (50:33) and Charlotte Alexander (55:39) led the way.

Money raised by the community event went towards the SVSEF and Jenny Gatehouse Hebert?s Parkinson?s ?Climb for a Cure.? Hebert?s fundraising proceeds were passed on to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson?s Research.
