Wood River cracks half-dozen wins
Squad jams Jerome 5-zip
While a shiny 6-0 record and a half a dozen shutouts looks flawless on paper, Wood River girls? soccer coach Greg Gvozdas is not completely satisfied.
?Our finishing could be better,? he remarked.
Gvozdas is referring to the ability of the team to convert scoring chances and his Wolverines had plenty in a league matchup at Jerome Tuesday.
?We probably outshot them 20-2,? he said. ?We had a lot of chances.?
The chances translated into a 5-0 victory for the Wolverines and their second league win of the season.
Five different Wolverines cracked the scoreboard. Brianna Hull-Mullins and Gina Thomas (penalty kick) scored their first goals of the season. Kaitlin Gasenica, Ireland King and Margii Driscoll also converted. Driscoll notched her tenth goal of the season.
In six games, Hailey has outscored its opponents 21-0 and goalie Jessi Pieschl has seen less action than Michael Jordan?s hairspray.
It poses a problem to play opponents lesser than you. Teams, especially inexperienced ones, tend to play down to their opponent?s level, which does not prepare you for the level of play you will find in a state tournament.
Wood River has nine varsity matches remaining and has played and beaten all but two of the squads, Century (5-0-1) and Burley (0-5).
Defending 4A-state champion Century should pose the toughest test of the regular season. The Wolverines traveled to Pocatello yesterday to play the Diamondbacks. The rematch is scheduled for Oct. 2 in Hailey.
?I think it will be a good test for us,? Gvozdas said.
