Baldy Hill Climb beckons

Annual SVSEF fundraiser features ?Climb for a Cure?

September is here, which means the Baldy Hill Climb is coming up quickly.

The 26th annual 1.86-mile, 3,140 vertical foot climb from the bottom of Warm Springs to the top of Baldy is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25 starting at 9 a.m. (for hikers) and 10 a.m. (for racers). Entry fee is $25 for those 14-and-up, and $15 for those under 13. To be included in the awards, you must enter the racing class.

Participants receive an event t-shirt and will have their post-race clothing transported to the summit. There, a post-race lunch and beverage will be served.

In conjunction with this year?s event is Jenny Gatehouse?s Climb for a Cure to help in the fight against Parkinson?s disease.

Hebert, a longtime Ketchum resident, was diagnosed with Parkinson?s two years ago. The mother-of-two is soliciting funds for the Michael J. Fox Parkinson?s Disease Foundation. Sponsors can donate a set amount or contribute an amount for every minute Gatehouse finishes below 90 minutes. Pledges can be made online at www.michaeljfox.org or by calling Gatehouse at 726-8511.

The Baldy Hill Climb is conducted by the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, with all proceeds to the SVSEF. Last year there were 187 finishers (74 hikers and 113 racers). Ryan Schmidt, 26, won his second straight hill climb in 36:28 and Adrienne Leugers, 44, captured her fifth consecutive women?s championship and 10th overall in a time of 44:26. Hiking winners were Zac Brown 50:27 and Jennifer Schwartz 53:38. Course records are 35:11 by Michael Tobin and 42:46 by Jen Douglas.
