A spud with all the trimmings

The boos from the crowd were loud and plentiful, even if they were only kidding. That?s the kind of reaction a dynasty gets.

Wicked Spud/Bradley Construc-tion wrapped up its fifth consecutive Hailey coed softball tournament title this past Sunday at Lions Park in Hailey, even to the dismay of the opposing teams. The Spud beat Budweiser/Oak Street in the finals, 19-9.

The fifth consecutive champion-ship for the Wicked Spud puts the champs on par with the last great dynasty of the coed league, Uhrig Fencing/River Run Auto Parts, who also put together a string of five con-secutive titles from 1995-99. Wicked Spud has a 107-17-1 record in the past five years to sit atop the league.

Hard hitting Jeff Burrell, Spud?s left fielder, was named tournament MVP for the second year in a row, with Anna Edwards being awarded the MVP for runner-up Budweiser.

It was the Wicked Spud building a 12-5 lead after the third inning of the championship game that put them on cruise control for their fifth straight banner. Burrell had a home run and a double, along with three RBI?s. Buddy Isom, Mike Watson, and Bon-nie Burrell also contributed for the Spud with two hits and three runs apiece.

On the losing end of the final game, Greg Edwards had three hits and two runs and T.J. Peterson helped with two triples. Anna Edwards fin-ished the game with two hits and two runs.

Leading up to the championship game was some exciting softball, including the semi-final match-up won by Budweiser 13-12 over Ander-son Asphalt.

Facing a 11-6 deficit after five innings, Anderson fought back and tied the game 11-11, thanks to the hot hitting of Hoss Schmidt (3 hits, 3 runs) and his two-out, RBI double.

In the end, the Budweiser offense was too much for Anderson, as Greg Edwards contributed another five hits and four runs, as well as Bobbi Ed-wards? four hits. For Anderson, Sue Mulcahy ripped three hits.

The double elimination tourna-ment at Lions Park was the wrap up of the summer long coed slow pitch softball league that saw the Spud take the regular season title with a 12-3-1 record, as well as going 4-0 in the tournament.

Robin Tomasi/MB/Big Horn Title was the league runner-up with an 11-5 record (2-2 in the tourney), fol-lowed by Anderson (11-5, 3-2) and Budweiser (10-6, 3-2).

Another highlight of the weekend long tournament was the Red Ele-phant?s lone victory of the season, beating the Hailey Hotel 11-10 in their second game on Saturday. Sil-ver Dollar/ABC Bail Bonds and the Marketron Mudhens also enjoyed victories in the season ending tour-nament.

The Hailey coed softball league would like to thank Independent Rubbish for donating the dumpsters for the two days of the tournament.
