Hillcrest hammers Wood River

Despite dominating numbers in time of possession and first downs it did not translate to the scoreboard for the Wood River football team.

In non-conference action at Hillcrest Friday, the hometown Knights trumped the Wolverines 42-17 at Thumper Field Friday.

?I can?t complain about the effort,? coach Dale Martin said. ?It?s just the mistakes. We had four blown assignments that cost us touchdowns.?

Hillcrest tailback Kyle Moore propelled the Knights to victory with five scoring runs of 49, 29, 1, 51 and 76-yards.

?Hillcrest had a lot of speed and three times he (Moore) got outside and took us to the house,? Martin said.

Thanks to a solid rushing effort, Wood River had the ball for almost 30 minutes of the game, but was forced to punt six times. The Wolverines posted points on three of their 10 possessions.

?We ran the middle on them,? Martin said. ?Our backs did a great job.?

So did their kicker, Dima Springs.

Springs 30-yard field goal put the Wolverines on the scoreboard to trail Hillcrest 7-3 after the first quarter.

Wood River tacked on a touchdown with six seconds left in the first half to trail 20-10. Craig Werley and Huston Brashears connected on a 29-yard scoring strike.

Despite the final touchdown of the half, Hillcrest had the momentum heading into the locker room.

?It was their homecoming game and their coach?s wife died on Wednesday. It was a very emotional game for them,? Martin said.

Hillcrest tacked on three more touchdowns in the second half to take an insurmountable lead. The Wolverines final score came on a one-yard plunge by Tyler Jackson with 46 seconds remaining.

?The kids played hard and we are just getting over the hump,? Martin said. ?Unfortunately, this week is not going to be any easier.?

Wood River faces Bonneville on the road this Friday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

After two games the Bees are 1-1 with a 34-29 win over Idaho Falls and a 42-35 loss to Madison.

?Our first four games are our toughest,? Martin said.

?We just have to keep playing. We?re going to keep working and we are going to hold the course. I think we will be fine.?
