Wood River girls collect fifth straight win

At this point in the season, the only team this Wood River girls? soccer team has to watch out for is itself.

Off to a 5-0 start with all five victories by shutout, the Wolverines have to guard against the overconfidence easy wins can breed.

But coach Greg Gvozdas seems to have the situation well in hand.

?I try and preach against that, that we won?t overlook anyone,? he said. ?If we continue to improve and grow the results will take care of themselves.?

The Wolverines took care of the Preston Indians 4-0 in Hailey Saturday.

Striker Margii Driscoll recorded her third consecutive two-goal game to boost her season total to nine. Tara Cappel (Nicole Schulz) and Ireland King slotted solo scores.

King scored four minutes into regulation, collecting a long ball from Calley Brown, breaking down the wing and beating the opposing goal short-sided.

?I was glad to see Ireland score. She has been playing really well for us lately,? Gvozdas remarked.

Brown also had the assist on the second goal, passing it on the left wing to Driscoll, who, very similar to King, beat the goalie on the near post.

Wood River outshot the Indians 22-1 overall. Goalie Jessi Pieschl touched the ball in the 37th minute of the opening half.

After a league game at Jerome Tuesday, Wood River will face its stiffest test thus far: a road match against defending 4A champion Century on Thursday.

?I think it will be a good test for us,? Gvozdas said. ?It will show us were we are at this point in the season.?

As of Monday, Wood River was ranked the #1 4A soccer team in the state in the IdahoSports.com power ranking. Century is second.
