Snappers, Cyclones clash in World Series

Wood bat baseball finale

One team has the league?s dominant pitcher in righthander Matt Zachary, a senior at Albertson College in Caldwell. And the other team is the league?s hottest, having won nine of its last 10 games.

The Waxroom Snappers (9-3) and Coors Light Cyclones (9-3) will bring identical overall records into the ninth ?World Series,? of the Blaine County Title Sun Valley Men?s Adult Base-ball League this weekend.

Founders Field in Hailey will stage the wood-bat season finale on Saturday, Aug. 21 with game times at 12 noon and 3 p.m., and Sunday, Aug. 22 (if necessary) at noon. It?s a best- of-three short series.

The two teams split four games this season.

With Zachary (7-0, 2.18 ERA, 91 K in 53 innings) nearly untouchable, the Snappers won the first-half cham-pionship at Ketchum?s Atkinson Park. A veteran team with many weapons, the Snappers beat the Cyclones 11-2 and 14-2 with Zachary on the hill.

Meanwhile, the Cyclones started the season 0-2 after lopsided losses to Lefty?s River Dogs and the Snappers. Then, the Cyclones reeled off nine wins in 10 games capped by Monday night?s 11-6 victory over the Snap-pers that gave the Cyclones the sec-ond-half title.

One big factor: Cyclones work-horse lefthander Riley Nash (3-3) isn?t expected to play this weekend because he?s attending a funeral. It will cut into the Cyclones pitching depth, but Coors has a promising arm in long relief specialist James Cordes (4-0, 1.46 ERA).

The Snappers will be without the services of leading hitter Cory Goico-echea (.393), who underwent jaw surgery, but are still solid with Pat McGee (.391), Matt Buxton (.353) and Zachary (.342). The Cyclones boast strong hitters led by Kellen Chatterton (.471), John Rathfon (.444) and Ryan Stavros (.349).

Curtis Bacca?s Snappers, the 2001 champs, fell in three games to Lefty?s River Dogs in last year?s ?World Series.? Behind Dan Freeman?s pitching, the Dogs won 6-5 and 11-7 (title game). The Snappers won the middle game 13-6 to force a decider.
