Fishing Report

by Bill Mason

As the Labor Day weekend slips into the sunset, left behind is some damn fine fishing. All waters are producing well. I do not expect to see a change in the week to come. Let?s have a look at what you can expect.

· SILVER CREEK?Some Beatis is seen in the afternoon but the main hatch is Callibeatis, both above and below Kilpatrick bridge. Thorax Duns, Callibeatis Cripples #18 and a Callibeats Nymph #18 are all taking fish. A Parachute Beatis #20-22 as well as a Mason Quill Beatis Spinner #22, should do the job when Beatis is seen on the water. Some fish have been taken using small Midge Patterns #22 and foam Beetles #14 as an alternative imitation. But for the most part, with the exception of Callibeatis, the tiny stuff is required to take the fish.

· BIG WOOD RIVER?Some fish are being taken in the morning using Flashback Pheasant Tail Nymphs #16-18 but the better dry fly fish starts in the late morning and ventures into most of the afternoon. Because there is some Beatis as well as some Midge activity is seen, a Parachute Adams #20 is readily taking fish. That said, most fishermen are now fishing and moving the better fish using Red Quill patterns, for it is now been on the water enough to get the trout?s attention. A Mason Red Quill #10-12, Parachute Hare?s Ear #10 and even in a pinch, a Gray Wulff #10, will move fish to the fly. A Red Quill Nymph #10 can also be effective. This is the time of year some very large fish can be taken on the surface so if I were you, I would take advantage of the situation.

· BIG LOST?Also fishing well but a bit more difficult than other streams. Trico is still abundant. A Parachute Adams will take fish, if the cast and drift are properly executed. Nymph fishing is improving. A Prince Nymph #10-12, Copper Johns #14-16, San Juan Worms #10 and Bead Head Soft Hackles #16 will work if fished in the deeper waters as well as the riffles. Even a Black and Olive Wooly Bugger #8-10 have moved some very nice fish. Don?t forget some Cranefly patterns as well.

· PENNY LAKE/LAKE CREEK?Both should have an abundant amount of fish in them, left over from the weekend. Fishing should be quite good using bait, spinners and flies.

· WARM SPRINGS/TRAIL CREEK?I can?t say that either of these streams have been red hot but reports have indicated some fish are being caught using general patterns such as Elk Hair Caddis, Royal Wulff, Humpy?s and Prince Nymph, all in sizes #14-16.
