Bronco tennis rides high in Labor Day tennis

At Warm Springs Tennis Club

Boise State University?s highly-regarded Bronco men?s tennis team coached by Greg Patton galloped into Ketchum last weekend and played scintillating tennis during the four-day Labor Day tournament at Warm Springs Tennis Club.

Ten of the 14 players in men?s Open singles were the BSU team members, who Patton hopes will climb into the top-15 ranking nationwide in NCAA Division 1 tennis. And two newcomers to the Bronco program ended up in Monday?s singles final.

Senior Ikaika Jobe, 21, a transfer who played three years for the Saint Louis Billikens, won four matches including the 6-3, 7-6 (1) championship over Bronco freshman Luke Shields of Grand Junction, Colo.

Jobe, from Honolulu, Hawaii, was a two-time state prep tennis champion in Hawaii. He knocked off the tournament?s top seed, BSU star Thomas Schoeck of Germany, then rolled right over Shields, who was one of the top five-ranked juniors in the U.S. before signing with the Broncos.

Also Monday, Shields teamed with Australian teammate Ehren Vaughan to capture men?s Open doubles 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 over BSU teammates Eric Roberson of California and Nils Klemann of Germany.

There were 76 singles players in six classes and 58 doubles teams in nine classes.

The four-day holiday tournament was sponsored by Chandler?s restaurant and Atkinsons?. The sponsors provided prizes for first and second places and also did the whole Saturday night barbecue for 200 people. Tournament organizers Kathy and Mark Scribner also thanked the three families hosting BSU players.
