Sun Summit riders race in Boise
Team fares well in junior series
Junior members of the Sun Summit Cycling
team competed in the BYRDS Junior Stage Race in Boise, July 24-25.
The series featured a road race Saturday
morning, a time trial that night and a criterium around the Statehouse on
Sunday.
In the U-14 division, Jimmy Hague won both
the time trial and criterium. Hague participated in the Ray Nelson Little League
tournament that morning which kept him from riding in the road race and knocked
him out of contention for the overall title.
13-year old teammate Max Durtschi
collected overall honors. Durtschi won the road race and was runner-up to Hague
in the other two events. Sun Summit rider Zack Lowry was second overall, seven
minutes and 38 seconds behind Durtschi. 12-year old Chase Caulkins finished in
seventh place overall.
Coach Greg Stock remarked, "In the
criterium, they raced really, really well as a team. They practiced controlling
the pack and did that to the letter. Jimmy pulled Max off the front and Zach
slowed down the pack. I am pretty proud of them."
Mikey Matteson was fifth overall in the
15-16 year old division. Two other riders on thesquad, Andrew McKean and Drew
Deffe did not race in the series.
Stock said the Sun Summit teams rides
together once a week.
"We practice technique and tactics. We
talk about what happened and why. They are pretty aware in that way," he said.
Stock added the team will compete in a
national competition in Park City in mid-August and the state championships in
Boise at the end of August.
"We are focusing on winning state and we
are going to Utah to get some experience," he said.
