Harpers stay out of bunkers to win golf tournament

By JODY ZARKOS
Express Staff Writer

Like so many things, women add a civilized touch to what can be the highly uncivilized game of golf.

Wednesday was a beautiful bluebird day in Sun Valley and the perfect backdrop for the 10th annual Sun Valley Ladies Golf Invitational. The theme was "It Happened in Sun Valley."

Like the era from which the famous song sprang, the 72 women in the tournament, were fabulously turned out: well coifed, well manicured and well dressed, but the best looking part was their games.

Mother and daughter, Teddy and Jennifer Harper shot a torrid 75 (best ball) to capture the low gross division in the A Flight.

Janet Cantor, who was part of the Harper’s foursome with partner, Pat McGinnis, said of Jennifer, who happens to sport a 5 handicap, "She is just a beautiful, natural golfer."

The younger Harper graduated from Oregon State in 1992 and has lived in the Valley for the last 12 years.

Jennifer said she enjoyed golfing with her mother, and quipped, "She likes to think she taught me everything I know."

Runners-up in the A Flight were Terry Tracy and Kathy Hanchett of Twin Falls with a 79.

"We were brilliant on the front nine with a 30 net. The back nine just ate us up," Tracy remarked.

Also in the A Flight, Jeanne Mace and Ursula Hinson teamed to take first place in net with a 60.

Nancy Crandall and Deborah Sievers defeated Gail Lincoln and Liz David in a card playoff to win low gross in the B Flight with an 82.

A net score of 62 propelled Edie Cary and Bunny Whitaker to first place.

Cary said, "My partner played beautifully. She had all the strokes."

C Flight champions were Marnee Wirth and Ann Baker with an 87 low gross score, and Edyth Goodman and Bixie O’Connell with a 62 net.

Claire Bailey and Jeanne Welsh combined for an 89 gross score to win the D Flight. Net champions were Margaret and Donna Gilmour with a 62.

Taking home great gift certificates to area restaurants were Closest to the Pin winners Donna Howard (#3), Janet Cantor (#5), Barbara Johnson (#15), and Bonnie Hutchinson (#17).

The tournament tipped off with a cocktail party at the Golden Eagle clubhouse on Tuesday.

Chairperson Polly Biedebach remarked of the tournament, "It went very well. Especially because we had such a gorgeous day with all the thunder and rainstorms we have been getting lately. We are just thrilled the way it turned out."
