Gates golf takes a youthful approach
120 players in this year’s tournament
It was a good day of golf for a good cause
Sunday, June 13 when the seventh annual Chuck Gates Memorial golf tournament was
staged at Sun Valley Golf Course in a shotgun scramble best-ball format.
Placing third in the Gates Flight
were, from left, Tom Monge, Terry Cox, David Timmons and David Barovetto.

Organizer Roger Roland said the tournament
raised over $3,500 for the Chuck Gates Youth Golf Endowment established two
years ago through the city of Ketchum. The tournament proceeds over seven years
are approaching $30,000.
A generous $5,000 donation made by Woody
Stuart from the Dwight Stuart Youth Endowment from Los Angeles greatly
supplemented this year’s total.
Interest generated from the Gates
endowment goes directly to the junior golf program at Ketchum’s Atkinson Park.
Each year, the program helps over 150 boys and girls ages 6-15 with instruction,
equipment and play on local courses.
Gates, one of seven founders of the Idaho
Mountain Express newspaper, died Dec. 6, 1997 in Nevada at the age of 51. He
started Ketchum’s first radio station, KRMR. Playing golf was his passion in
later life.
In all, 30 teams and 120 players
participated in this year’s C. Gates 18-hole tournament.
Low gross winners at –15 were Bob Dunn,
Jack Dies, Baird Gourlay and John Miller.
Winners in the Chuck "A" Flight were
Charles Evans, Joel Evans, Cam Faulds and Wray Farmin. Gates "B" Flight winners
were Janet Appleton, Glen Thomas and Lisa Ferguson.
Tournament organizers tipped their hats to
head pro Doyle Corbett and his helpful Sun Valley Golf Course crew.
