Moose maintain mastery, 10-5 and 8-5

Suns' season down to four games

Sun Valley took only 15 players and neither of its two starting goalies to Jackson Hole last weekend.

So it was no real surprise that the Jackson Hole Moose continued their recent mastery of the Sun Valley Suns with 10-5 and 8-5 ice hockey triumphs Friday and Saturday at Snow King Center in Wyoming.

The Moose built an early 7-1 lead Friday and coasted to the 10-5 victory behind three-goal hat tricks from Minnesota wing Gregg Gripentrog (a weekend-high 10 points) and Justin Martin. Chris King tallied two goals for the Suns in the setback.

It was much closer Saturday, Sun Valley grabbing the early 2-0 lead on goals by Vilnis Nikolaisons and King. Defenseman Josh Jacobson scored his first Suns goal and Ryan Enrico added his second power play goal of the weekend making it 4-4 after two.

But the Moose (19-5) ripped off four unanswered goals in the third period to prevail 8-5. It was Jackson Hole’s seventh win in eight games against the Suns (10-10) this season.

"Everybody played hard. We just ran out of gas," said Suns player/coach Chris Benson.

No games this weekend

On Monday, the New England Wings pulled out of their scheduled two-game series March 26-27 in Sun Valley, but coach Benson said the Connecticut Camels are still due to close out the Suns home season April 2-3 on Sun Valley ice.

Newly added to the Suns schedule is a season-ending two-game set against the McCall Mountaineers Friday and Saturday, April 9-10 at Manchester Ice Centre in McCall.

A special promotion called the Hockey Fun Package has been offered by Super 8 Motel in McCall (208-634-4637). It includes two room nights at the Super 8 Motel, two lift tickets at Brundage Mountain and four ice rink tickets. Cost is $200. Reserve through April 4 by calling the motel.

Check the Express Web site for last weekend’s summary and updated Suns statistics.
